A Russian ship reached open water off Antarctica after struggling through a huge mass of sea ice for days, a Russian shipping company and a British travel agency said Friday. The icebreaker Captain Khlebnikov, with 101 passengers on board, got stuck in the ice earlier this week near Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea. The £800million, 225,000-ton leviathan Oasis Of The Seas, was shown to the media and public at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, by US company Royal Caribbean. The event was covered live on American breakfast television.

The Coast Guard says a New Bedford fishing boat became rapidly unstable as a full fishing net was lowered on deck, causing it to sink and kill its captain a year ago. The Coast Guard said Friday that its investigation showed the 71-foot dragger Costa & Corvo capsized and sank quickly, killing 57-year-old Antonio Mesquita. Another fishing boat rescued three other crew members.

When Alvin Little entered the U.S. Navy in June 1945 at age 18, six of his brothers were already serving in the military. "My mother, Louella Little, had seven sons in the service in World War II," Little said. One brother, Ernest Little, was killed in an F-4U plane during overhead gunnery training near Jacksonville, Fla. "We were winding down the war," he said.

With a team of experts on board and a crowd of well-wishers on the shore, the 91-year-old W.P. Snyder Jr. was towed away from Marietta Friday, just as the boat had towed hundreds of barges during its 37-year career.
